Powder coated hatches were developed as an additional feature, and the livery was applied using an artistic serigraphy technique. All parts were manufactured at BFG’s Bahrain facility using RTM (Resin Transfer Moulding) and contact moulding processes, and are compliant with NF F 16-101 fire safety regulations.

Projects Rail & TransportNTV ordered 25 Alstom Automotrice à grande vitesse (AGV) trainsets with 11 cars each in January 2008. Alstom built 17 of these at its plant at La Rochelle, France, and eight at Savigliano, Italy. As part of its strategic supplier relationship with Alstom Transportation, BFG produced 50 kits of driver desks and cabs at ATMC Industrie, its fully owned subsidiary in France. BFG also produced 50 sets of interior panels for the trains at NOMA Composites, its facility at La Rochelle, France. The driver desks and cabs were produced from fire retardant polyester using a contact moulding process. The interior panels, which included window panels with coat hooks and sun shades, passenger car step covers, and ceiling covers, used a combination of compression moulding and pultrusion processes. All parts comply with NF F 16-101 and UNI fire safety standards.

Projects Rail & TransportAlstom will provide 34 Citadis Spirit light rail vehicles (LRVs) with 4 cars each for the project, which marks the entry of Alstom LRVs into the North American market. Citadis Spirit can operate in extreme cold weather and move at speeds of up to 100 km/h. Alstom has also won a 30-year maintenance contract for this project. As part of its strategic supplier relationship with Alstom, BFG provided front ends, driver cabs, and interior panels for these trains. 89 different types of panels went into each train: 5 for the front ends, 3 for roof arches, 7 for skirts, 13 for the driver desks, and 61 for the interiors. The front end posed a significant challenge, being a highly complex part with a metal structure embedded into the FRP. This was addressed by constructing a precise jig to place the FRP onto the metal structure. The part also underwent rigorous water tightness testing before delivery. The front ends, DD, boogie boxes, and end walls were produced using an open contact moulding process. The under-window panels, and door and window pillars used a resin transfer moulding (RTM) process. All parts comply with NF F 16-101 and Grid 3 fire safety standards.

The driver desks comply with M1 F1 regulations. The project also required an anti-graffiti coating on all panels.

Projects ArchitectureTaking its inspiration from the legendary Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Singapore's Al-Istighfar Mosque has been in daily use since the turn of the millennium. With room for a congregation of 3,300 worshippers, BFG fabricated and installed the mosque's centrepiece -- a 12 metre diameter onion-shaped composite dome, with window panels and composite skirting below. Conventionally tooled and contact moulded in 12 segmented FRP panels using fire retardant resin and sealed with leak-proof joints, the dome was covered with a special UV coating to guarantee its colour finish would last for over a decade.

Projects ArchitectureDesigned to work together in a series of intricate layers, BFG built each of the three different FRP domes from 12 separate panels. The fabrication team at BFG in Bahrain used a traditional contact moulding process and rubber moulds to shape the domes’ impressive 3D geometry. Installed in sequence on site by BFG, the inner dome was designed with a smooth gelcoat, the centre dome boasts a high gloss external finish, and the third dome, seen on the exterior, has a stunning see-through design with an inlaid Islamic pattern. Built to last for decades, the domes can withstand winds of up to 120km/h.

Projects ArchitectureBFG fabricated 3,180 lightweight composite cladding panels for the 63-storey KAFD World Trade Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In all, BFG oversaw complete engineering, fabrication and delivery of 47,000 square metres of decorative composite panelling for the exterior of the tower. The panels were constructed from an FRP outer surface with a foam core, including aluminium structural struts, rockwool insulation and all necessary components for an aluminium attachment system. The panels are capable of resisting sand-laden loads carried in high winds some 300 metres above ground level, and meet NFPA 285 fire compliance standards.

Projects ArchitectureThe 35,000m2 Katara Plaza development promises its visitors a distinctly cultural experience as it fuses ultra-modern facilities with classical architectural influences and traditional Middle Eastern heritage. To reflect the coming together of ancient and modern, BFG was commissioned to engineer, build and supervise the installation of a pair of structural composite domes, each 14.5 metres in diameter. Fabricated in 16 panels each using traditional tooling and a hand lamination process, the FRP domes were both finished in a translucent gelcoat ready for cladding in distinctive copper sheeting. The Katara domes have a Class 1 fire rating and, to offer additional protection from coastal gales, are designed to withstand a wind load of up to 160km/h.

Projects ArchitectureServing over 30 million passengers a year, Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport is the gateway to the Filipino capital. When the airport needed a new canopy to cover the long passenger drop-off area outside Terminal 3, it turned to BFG for a weather-proof composite alternative to replace the previous aluminium structure which had been blown away by typhoon-force winds. BFG designed, manufactured and installed a perfect sequence of arched FRP ceiling panels, each approximately 1.5 metres by 4 metres, designed with a cantilevered overhang to bear the brunt of future storms. So far, the canopy has withstood the effects of typhoons for over 15 years.

Projects ArchitecturePre-finished with a brilliant white gelcoat on the exterior-facing side, the dome’s cladding panels needed no further painting or external treatment once installed, and achieve a Class 1 fire rating in accordance with BS476 Parts 1 and 2. To transport the dome safely on the long trans-Arabian road journey from Bahrain to Mecca, it was decided to fabricate the internal and external skins in 32 segments each. Assembling on site under BFG’s supervision, the FRP sandwich panels were fixed to the existing steel-framed structure using steel brackets and an ingenious hanger system. The result is a landmark dome that is the very centrepiece of the university’s fast-growing campus. It will require little or no maintenance over the decades to come, and is a fraction of the weight of the concrete alternative, yet every bit as robust – able to withstand a sand-laden wind load of up to 120 km/h.

Projects ArchitectureBahrain's imposing Rashid Al Zayani Mosque takes a traditional form and applies it on a grand scale. Sitting on a 2,810 square metre site, the mosque has capacity for up to 1,230 worshippers. BFG was selected to design, manufacture and install a series of structural domes -- from the landmark 16 metre diameter dome, beautifully finished in bronze, to a secondary eight metre dome and a suite of five eight metre diameter half domes arranged in sequence around the base of the main structure. Fabricated using a hand lamination process, the domes are gelcoated FRP with a double-sided finish and can withstand wind loads of up to 120 km/h.
